Urgent warning as police tell people NOT to call 999 - even in an emergency

PEOPLE across the country have been warned not to call 999, even in an emergency, due to a technical fault.

The Metropolitan Police initially shared a statement on Twitter saying "a number of forces" had been affected. An alert with the same wording was also shared by other forces, with Northamptonshire Police tweeting that the outage was "nationwide". Greater Manchester Police added: "BT have advised a number of forces that they are experiencing issues with their 999 lines that may affect connection to an emergency service."Instead, people are advised to call the usually non-emergency number 101.
