Urgent search to find lost child in Lake District gorge after cries for help

A child was taken to safety after getting lost in Whit Beck gorge as a walker heard their cries for help. .

The walker heard the cries for help at around 1pm on Saturday . The police were able to use software to track the exact location of the call. Members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were sent to the scene and were later given more information from the police to say that a child who had run off up Skiddaw. The child was helped out of the ravine by a passer-by.They made their way across Lonscale Fell to be met by team members who escorted the child back to his mother at the Gale Road car park. The rescue team were at the scene for around 2 hours.

A spokesperson for Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said: "A walker called the police after hearing cries for help from a child in the ravine of Whit Beck between Jenkin Hill on Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell. A phone find was able to place the location of the informant. "A small team was sent to investigate. More information subsequently arrived from the police concerning a child who had run off up Skiddaw. A passer by managed to help the child out of the ravine from where they made their way across Lonscale Fell to be met by team members who escorted the child back to his mother at the Gale Road car park."
