Police guidance that people can drive to countryside to exercise will cause 'untold anxieties', rural groups say

The new guidance was produced by the National Police Chiefs' Council and the College of Policing and published last week, following complaints that officers were being heavy-handed in enforcing the law restricting people's movements during the coronavirus outbreak.

Under the guidance, officers are advised that driving to the countryside for a walk is"reasonable" if"far more time" is spent walking than driving.

RuralCrimeNtwk CAupdates CACampaigns I drive 2.5 miles out to the country every day for an hours walk, have done since day 1, will do until day end! Always some group feel the need to stick their beaks in!

The country lane I live on has never been so busy.

I want to go to sea fishing but the river I use to get there is closed to recreational craft. Frustrating.

Exercise is the saviour at this time. See no problem driving a short distance to do so

Sweet. I’m off to York this weekend for a 5 hour run...

What happened to: 'National Parks Britains Breathing Spaces' ? All the park authorities chanting such now replaced with NIMBY F. OFF Forgetting these open spaces are not just for the privileged few. Disgusting, dispicable how some turn quickly on those in need of breathing space

Translation : 'we want all this lovely space to ourselves, bugger off back to your cramped towns and cities'

Get real then! People need life.

Get off my land!!!!!!

Maybe us city dwellers will wear a bell around our neck “unclean, unclean” grow up we live in the same country

Mr Gove said walk should be hour max. Police say ok to drive then walk, but only if you spend far more time walking than driving. To abide by both, the drive would have to be max of about 15 mins e/w. Hopefully that'll restrict number people able to reach countryside. Hopefully!

Of course it doesn’t matter where you walk, it’s the social distancing that matters. It’s not as if they are out to shake hands with every farmer they come across. I think Joe Wicks should teach everyone how to moon walk like Armstrong so we exercise on the moon.

We live in the country and during the lockdown we have had an abundance of cyclists and walkers opening and closing gates etc and not disinfecting as they go. Not wise at all!!!!!

But the bbc can film in hospitals and travel to public places to film......

Unfortunately lots of ‘visitors’ to the countryside are inconsiderate. Litter has increased, gates left open during lambing, loose dogs in sheep fields. By all means visit the countryside but plse show respect. Take your rubbish home, close gates & keep dogs on leads. Stay safe

The Chinese shouldn’t have broken a taboo and eaten these beautiful creatures - period

These 'rural groups' are usually middle class townies.

Dont see the difference it will make, not if the people who live more rural are following the guidance. Its socially distancing yourself that will make the difference, not city people who just happens to go into the country for a few hours.

How about reminding people how to respect the countryside while visiting these out of the ordinary places? The wildlife trust site I volunteer for has seen a massive increase of litter and dog shit spewn since lockdown.

'were all in this together' becomes a sick joke so long as keep the proles out of the countryside.

If you're anxious don't go ?

I'm curious to know how the government defines 'exercise' and how they apply it to people who can't jog, cycle, power-walk etc. Given that we've heard about people being kicked off park benches etc., they clearly don't mean 'get some fresh air'.

These country folk do my head in. Living in a block of 117 flats in Central London is hard during the lock down. If I had a car I would definitely drive to the countryside and see a fucking tree or two.....

They're already doing it. 12 cars parked on the hamlet common on Sunday. Big groups (bigger than any household I'd wager) pressing past each other on single track footpaths. A photoshoot on Saturday. Photographer very cross I walked through his shot. Pub had to put a sign in

Get your heads out of your arses UK! we have had six weeks of this and everyone is sticking to it without whinging. And it's working!

👍👍👍👍

Community police are giving the public unnecessary grief.

Desperate news.... this is so last month..

I give it 24 hours before there’s a report that Hugo and Anna have driven their SUV the 80 miles from Sw1 out to “Downey-on-wold” to walk Dylan, the labradoodle. Only to find hostile locals, no Waitrose and a shortage of artisan coffees...

Ok and when it’s over they will be begging to get people back what fuckin difference does it make if nobody is about, I bet those in rural areas are coming into towns to go shopping

I just hope when all of this is over, people remember those ‘tourist areas’ who made their feelings known so vehemently and give them a miss. They don’t deserve our custom.

So be anxious. The entire planet is anxious. Bloody state of some people.

These guidelines have only become necessary because some UK Police were showing a complete lack of common sense in dealing with their new powers.

Not being able to get out into the countryside is causing untold anxieties.

Why have they relaxed rules to allow people to drive to excercise?

These are local fields for local people...

oh ffs im a nurse working with this bloody virus but I was a mental health nurse for 25 years and even I know people need to get out to save their sanity.

nimby

The ability to drive a couple of miles to my usual woodland walking / foraging haunts has been an utter godsend for my anxiety and my mental health. We’re all in this together let’s not forget.

What the f is happening to the UK? Getting close to East Germany after just 4-5 weeks. Good luck keeping this up over the summer....
