A new drive to get universities to help disadvantaged students via tough targets is announced.

Although less prestigious than the highly selective Russell Group of 24 institutions, these modern post-1992 universities are still turning large numbers of students into top earners.

"A student's outcome after university needs to be as important to providers as a student's grades before university." Currently, all universities have targets for the proportion of disadvantaged students they must admit. They will be required to ensure these students study courses which deliver good outcomes for them, although there is little detail on this.

Measures could include running a summer school or offering students and lecturers to tutor pupils, the DfE said.

If the likes of targets, league tables and inspections drive up standards, as claimed, why aren't MPs subject to the same sort scrutiny?
