Under 25s are losing the biggest percentage of their income when the payments go down in October.

Morgan, whose surname we're not using, says there are days when his severe depression - which is the reason he cannot currently work - makes him lose his appetite. But on other days he skips meals even if he's hungry, to save money.

Morgan says he's angry about the £20 boost coming to an end, because although lockdown has eased most people he knows are still struggling to find work.image sourceUnder 25-year-olds have been worst hit by unemployment during Covid, as lockdown forced businesses to close The proportion of 16 to 24-year-olds claiming income-related benefits increased from 9% to 15% during Covid - a larger increase than any other age group,The first thing Zahra, 21, does when she receives her monthly universal credit payment is sit down with a calculator and work out her budget.

She was left with suicidal thoughts because of what she calls the "mental abuse" his family gave her.

Who is he?

What about getting a job?

Disgrace. How can they take this much needed cash away from them all. Cannot live on this benefit. Line their own pockets to hell with the needy. Disgraceful

Message me… I will show you a way out… 😎✌️

Too easy to complain about this when there are plenty of jobs out there where you would earn more. Just can’t do it sat in your a**!

I work with someone who won't do overtime or he will lose his universal credit for that month because he will have earnt too much..🤔🤔🤔🤔

Unemployable are you?

Could get used to working instead.

earthygirl011 This government have given millions of £’s in dodgy contracts there is no punishment for them and people go “Aw Boris” whilst comfortable about the most vulnerable and poverty stricken not having enough money to eat or pay their bills! Everything this government does stinks 😡

I'm not trying to be awful but realistically what has changed for people on benefits. Nothing, unlike people furloughed and lost money and some self employed not even got any money, so why people on benefits even got extra baffles me. Workers being punished again.

Well get a F**king job there are jobs out there just get off your ass and find one

.

It makes me laugh how the people that say that people on benefits are entitled and lazy also make fun of them for being losers and miserable, you can't have it both ways.

The evil of you people in the comments. Clearly never had a struggle in your life and think everything is being handed to people 😂 These people want to work and don’t choose to be on universal credit. It’s just punishing them for having nothing already

Not being funny but in certain areas that extra has been spent on drugs and drink. Should be given via food stamps only.

Well get a Flipping Job mate! Just Like the rest of us!

Depression isn't an issue in countries which don't pay benefits.

Info

Are you fit and heathy? If so, get a job. Plenty of jobs in hospitality.

Rather everyone telling what this guy should be doing / telling anyone on UC what to do, how would you fancy minimum wage positions which have no positive position to your mental health or career interest - especially after a pandemic. Moan about public money 🤝🏻 NHS funding

Why is everyone’s instant assumption about people on benefits that they don’t have jobs? Most of the time they have jobs, even multiple, which just manage to pay the bills, but have UC for that safety, may even for normal amounts of food rather than little. Be more empathetic.

They should get a job

Given that during the pandemic most people were stuck at home unable to spend money I never understood why the uplift was needed.

There’s plenty of work out there if you bother to look for it.

Being on universal credit sucks, i am basically punished for being a carer, but the government do not care, because we are just peasants.

I guess someone or many people will have to write some letters to all the MP's in order to make changes as £20 makes a big difference for someone poor like how Marcus Rashford did to get free school meals for families from poor households. worth a try

There isn't a person in the UK who hasn't suffered 'depression'. This belief that everyday should be happy and full of roses is media bullshit, life's not like that it's 90% shit at best. People need to get a grip, it's not depression it's everyday life...

fisher4450 For anyone dreaming that a UBI will give them limitless freedom to express their inner unicorn, Universal Credit in the UK has been cut by ₤20. Could never happen under UBI, the unicorns would never allow it.

With the job vacancies at at real high a job should be easy to get ?

Those who chose not to work got a £20 increase during the pandemic, those who were furloughed got a 20% and 40% cut in wages so BBC the people that work for a living and pay tax and NI in the UK once again are worse off

Plenty of work out there mate..

If he’s used to it there’s no issue….

I know people on benefits that smoke cigarettes, weed and go out drinking etc, don’t know how they manage that If some people can’t even afford food, strange

You’ve bred a generation of mostly young idle gimme kids, they are more interested in staying at school to get a job at McDonald’s at the end or wannabe pop stars pretty soon there will be nothing in the coffers because of these mamby panby woke tosses

Get a job and train as an HGV driver

Wey get a fkin job

If these people can work physically, why not make them do minimum amount of volunteer work. Doing something productive (without the stress of a proper job) can help with depression, plus thet won't then be sitting at home racking up the utility bills.

Train to be a lorry driver the UK needs you!

The replies to this tweet very clearly show us all how Britain has ended up in this position. “Pull yourself up by the bootstraps” mentality, a deep contempt for the poor, whilst the government continues to rob and pillage public funds with zero accountability.

There's plenty of jobs so we are told out there that's it

Become Lorry driver

Typical BBC sob story get a grip we need a decent back to work scheme. As for the shortage of drivers nobody wants to invest in training.

I'm a lefty and I have to agree with comments about this trying harder by applying to pick fruit or train as a HGV driver. There's clearly work out there.

Don’t worry universal basic income is coming soon to enslave us all , I mean save us all 🥳

Get a job, there are plenty, everyone would love to be in a job they want, most aren't.

Its quite ironic that there are plenty of job vacancies but we are focussing on why people who seem to choose not to work, will suffer. He does not look that unfit to work to me? Not working is NOT a Human Right!

I believe jobs are available !

Pretend your from Afghanistan

😂😂😂😂😂😂

I'm depressed. I work 2 jobs. Not the solution, but it keeps me going. I get counselling and am feeling better. Living on UC would seal my depression and push me into a downward cycle.

Another BBC tweet aimed at whipping up a class frenzy. So unhelpful and pretty pointless.

This is where the Goverment should intervene in a more tactile way. Currently a HGV shortage, okay create a plan to offer no interest loans with open eligibility so people can actually afford to gain their license. I can almost guarantee any driver shortage would be sorted….

Well there plenty of jobs going.......

Loads of jobs out there. More than ever. Let’s get people working and off benefits. Better for all.

Excuses excuses my 16 year old son has just left school and got a full time job within 3 days of leaving his qualifications aren’t that great but he was determined a lot of young people r depressed because they are pure lazy and don’t want to work, it goes hand in hand

I suppose it allows us to take in unlimited Afghanistan asylum seekers. 😙

Get a job take full responsibility for yourself. If you are pretending to go hungry then stop taking handouts and get a job and spend money on food.

Don't see how depression physically stops people having a job.theres people who want to work but can't so those who can all for if you can't don't. But if your working surely your minds to busy ?

I’m used to being knackered all the time. Get a fucking job

If you can get used to hunger pains surely you can get used to working. And you’ll get more than £20 to boot 😉
