An undertaker who defrauded grieving families out of thousands and left bodies to rot in the morgue has been jailed.ManchesterShe would regularly fail to collect bodies from hospital mortuaries in a ‘timely’ manner and one victim described how their loved one had been ‘abandoned in a fridge’ when Howell said they were in the chapel of rest.
Families said they waited for weeks for details of when funerals would be held, while their calls to Howell went unanswered, leaving them ‘anxious and distressed’. The court heard how, after receiving complaints from families, police and trading standards inspected her firm, Kenworthy Funeral Directors in Tameside, in February 2019.
Her lawyer, Mark Fireman, said the stolen money was ploughed back into the ‘failing business’ which Howell had been left to run against her wishes by her ex-husband.
