The historic building could remain closed for its 120th anniversary next year

It is uncertain how long a Northamptonshire library will remain closed - after North Northamptonshire Council refused to commit to a deadline due to the "eye-watering costs" involved in reparing the roof.

NNC's executive member for leisure and culture, councillor Helen Howell, said that, though it was "extremely disappointing" that it was forced to close, challenges with the building meant that repair work couldn't start immediately. Cllr Howell added: "I’ve seen the projected figures and it is eye-watering. We cannot just make snap decisions here- we have to do it properly, we have to consider every single resident in North Northants and what impact it has on their purse."

Cllr Howell told members in the chamber that the council couldn't "just throw something up to stop it from raining" and that approval has to be sought at every stage before anything is physically implemented.
