Michael Gove says progress on fixing the problems have been 'piecemeal', but Labour says social homes have been lost.

published by the Conservative think tank Bright Blue and the housing charity Shelter.

In their 2019 manifesto, the Conservatives - who have been in power since 2010 - committed to building 300,000 homes in England every year by the mid 2020s.In 2020, plans to force local local councils to accept new housing developments had to be paused following a fierce backlash from the government's own MPs.

The bill, currently going through Parliament, would introduce penalties for developers who are slow to build already-approved homes.

Do something about buy to let...do something about air BnB!

Finally he has learned the lines spoken for the last 30 years. Well done. The governments (of all persuasions) have been waiting for the baby boomers to die to free up the homes for the younger generations. A plausible strategy but no account has been made for mass immigration.

Wow, it took you 13 years to realise what everyone else could see when you took power. Maybe you shouldn't allow property developers to dictate your housing policy. Oh, for got they pay you £250,000 to have that privilege 🙄

Stop giving social housing to immigrants.

13 years!

Enoch Powell was right.

There’ll be many similar statements from Tories in the coming weeks defending 13 years of stagnation, we’re now going to,build houses, clean up water, fund the NHS, deliver growth….always jam tomorrow from this set of charlatans NeverTrustATory

Most people knew that housing was in a crisis 20 years ago, this isn't just a Tory government problem it is an every government since the 1970's problem. Tories however have massively profited from it.

Heard it b4. After 13 yes in power it's the Tories who av broken everything. All we get is sound bites from the Tories.

No shit Sherlock

The housing market has been broke for years. Thing is nobody knows how to repair it. A massive (and i mean massive) drop in prices is needed to bring them down to a realistic value. Just compare what £250k gets you here compared to rest of europe or even USA

The solution is a civil axillary corps.. we cannot keep giving developers funds and land only for them to fraudulently claim to run out of money for other developments... while profiting millions. Even if just using the military skills, keep them up to date & allows for more etc

Twelve years to realise that we await the next pearl of wisdom in a decades time

I bet he knows a property developer.

Wow, the party that basically broke the housing model now admitting that it is broken, who'd have thunk it

13 years late goblin boy

More homes, doctors, hospitals and infrastructure were needed BEFORE you allowed the influx of migrants and refugees!

We DO NOT need more homes, or more encroachment on green belts, more pollution, congestion & all the associated problems with overpopulation michaelgove. What we do need is a gvmt that fulfills its 2019 promise to control our borders and immigration. Both utter failures todate

How about putting the infrastructure in place as well. Loads of houses but no GP surgeries, schools, hospitals, police etc. You shouldn't do one without the other. Seems obvious but never applies.

God he’s SO FUCKING CLEVER.

And what’s he been doing for the last 13 years? Is it the case that elections are coming up so they are telling people what they want to hear again?

Delayed response to an old problem. Worryingly, they've had over twelve years to do something about it and only now admit there's a problem.

No we need homes people can afford.

Who broke it?

13 years

It's not more home ownership we need it's social housing.

Oh, come on, M. Gove. Not more of the same red-brick, tickey-tackey developments now blighting the green belt? michaelgove housing HousingCrisis

Where has he (and his party) been por the past 12 years? I thought they were the ones in government; able to deal with that issue.

No plenty of tax avoidance empty investment homes which must be handed over to local councils to house people in, plus all proposed new builds banned

What is causing the demand for housing

Name anything in the UK that isn’t broken after 13 years of Tory decimation.

Yes, we know and you have made broken promises every election on the subject.

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

We will shortly have no more land other than the green belts to build more houses on. This nation has become grossly overpopulated, and still, the numbers increase by the day. The type of housing that may be built to meet the crises will be little more sized than dog kennels

Not only are Conservative MPs denying that they are members of the Conservative Party, but they're also trying to convince us that they've not been running the country, the economy, the NHS and housing policy since 2010. Thats the alternative universe they're living in.

While we don’t train building trades and allow massive immigration……

Wherever I look new estates are being built. Greenbelt no longer seems to have any protection. Maybe this government shouldn’t have relaxed rules that forced builders to build smaller homes?

No! Just sort the immigration issue out 👍

Why haven’t they put illegals in empty Russian properties and rich empty homes in London 🫵

WTF everywhere I go they are building where are the windmills and new roads going to go, water, sewage plants, where are all the resources coming from for all these houses

Might I suggest that importing 500,000 fewer new people every year could be a good place to start in addressing the issue?

When you sell off 2.5 million social houses and not replace them and have an increase in population your going to find things like lack of housing happen 🤦

13 years in power

What’s the point in making more homes when we can’t even afford them lol

All talk. Let's see him put his money where is mouth is. He's in government.

They have had 12 years

13 YEARS IN POWER!

If only that 'Something Happened in 1997' hadn't have Happened, eh tomhfh ?

13 years...

Won't be for US! it'll be for the refugees.. Ive read loads of tweets about just this.!

If only Gove were in any sort of a position to address this over the last thirteen years.

Why don’t you at BBC ask Michael Gove who broke it in the last 13 years?

We need to build more for all the illegal immigrants that we are allowing into the country

Yeah but all we get are new build plots with overpriced, low quality houses with ridiculous estate charges.

Tories have ruined the housing market…as a landlord of 20+ years I am getting out. It’s just not worth it anymore. Some will say “great”…but landlords leverage their income to get BTL’s, which encourages builders to build more properties. Thanks for all the fish.

Median pay wales £29120 after pension and taxes £1886, 2 bed new build home with 10% deposit £1230 a month council tax £147 ,gas/elec/water £290 how can anyone afford to own their own home in this country.michaelgove RishiSunak Jeremy_Hunt Conservatives on your watch.

We don’t need empty sky scrapers but affordable homes

There’s enough homes. There’s too many people.

No shit Sherlock , and who is to blame TortpartyHousingCrisis Torychaos ToryBritain ToryGaslighting

How long has this been an urgent issue, and how long have the Tories been in government? michaelgove

How about stop importing hundred of thousands of damn foreigners every year then. Pretty simple. Stop any and all immigration legal or otherwise for the next decade or so, so we can right problems we have now, rather than piling extra on top of them.

Immigration and second homes are the only reason we would need more homes. I'd much prefer to stop both of those than lose farmland, green belt and green spaces. Farmland is being sold off at a scary rate, its gone forever once it's built on.

No new land to be built on michaelgove Stop building on farmland and greenbelt completely. Repossess empty homes, crack down on holiday homes and get the hotel system back into leisure use, or turn migrant hotels into homes. Turn empty offices onto homes.

Michael Gove.. Justice Secretary... Sacked Michael Gove.. Levelling up and Housing Minister.. Sacked. Let's just leave it there!

FSCS in our experience ignored clear evidence that our Financial Adviser lied about our incomes in order to illegally transact an inappropriate mortgage & get his commission.FSC S lied to MPs & their own Board about us to try to justify not compensating.

13 years! They haven’t built one! But we now must believe the Tories when they say they’ll act 🙄

Correction: UK housing model is broken because immigration is excessive.

House building is a Capitalist dream, houses are in short supply, thus prices are high and profits steady at around 25%.

The Conservatives have been in power for nearly 13 years. I think most of the issues in the Country have been caused by their incompetence or allowed to happen. Tories like to punish the British public all the time.

The immigration system is broken - far too many people coming in for too long. High tax, poor services and lack of housing. It’s just obvious.

He’s been in power for 13 years. What’s he done about it?!

In other news, the sky is blue and tories are prats. Yes, we need more housing. QUALITY, AFFORDABLE housing. State of our country because of these bloody tories, shambles

This is what they are going to push. Modern day concentration camps.

You were part of the problem you pranny. 50 years of successive governments have failed to build enough housing and infrastructure to cope with the population growth.

You mean more unaffordable homes that are owned by investors and not homeowners.

michaelgove YOU DID THIS

Who broke it? 13 years. 1 3. THIRTEEN

I hope they're building as much in Tory rural areas as they are where I live. We've hardly any nature left to enjoy. I suppose a forest to walk in is now a luxury only the wealthy should enjoy.

What a bunch of crap.. when will ppl accept the country is full, you can’t just keep building more, what about infrastructure that is already inadequate. We don’t need more homes, we need less ppl coming in, often illegally!

13 wasted years.

He means we dont have enough houses for our rapidly increasing, yet unexpected rise in population.

Where are these homes going to be built? They take every inch of space that children can play on and then complain they never play outside and are obese. Where is the infrastructure for all these new houses? Doctors, dentists, school places, not to mention the god awful roads.

Yeh build over everything

Or less immigration?

13 years, who broke it. Another post truth headline.

Houses exist they're just not in areas where people actually want to live.

If only this guy was in power for the last 13 years 😚

Right, who's been slipping acid in michael's coke?

I'd only he'd been in power for over a decade ...

No it needs more AFFORDABLE homes.

Conservatives had 13 years to care about this. Funny how now they’re talking about it with an election looming…

A tory saying a smart thing for once? Hopefully he doesn't just expect other people to build them and gets the government to, like they used to

Broken after 13 years of these Tories in power

Ya you guys need to build more free housing for the migrants invading your country.

They are Building in West Sussex like no tomorrow, there will not be a field left at this rate..

AFTER 12 YEARS MICHEAL GOVE THINKS THERE IS A PROBLEM, I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE 200,000 AFFORDABLE HOMES THE TORIES PROMISED, WAS IT JUST ANOTHER WHITE LIE.

Gee 🙄really?

Why don't people just buy the thousands of houses for sale on right move every week.

Not just the housing model, the entire country is broken. We’ve been sold off to the highest bidder

Wait … WHAT isn’t he or wasn’t he the housing minister and … oh haven’t the Tories been in govt THIRTEEN YEARS . What a flaming cheek Michael Gove.

Just another thing the Tories Broke!

More home or less invaders

Hes quick this Gove fells what a shining example to us all, if only the minoins had realised this extraordinary fact years ago.

No. You need to stop greedy people owning second homes they never use and give them to people in need. There is more than enough housing. Just greedy owners.

And whose been in power for 13 years? Who effectively sent so many builders home to the EU in recent times? Who is to blame for this mess?

13 years and now they come up with this... must be an election soon..

Time to ABOLISH LEASEHOLD michaelgove LeaseholdScandal

We don't need more homes. We need better repairs, less landbanking, fewer holiday homes, less foreign ownership & less under-occupation. Build, build, build is just another excuse to make Tory donors rich at the public's expense.

How many empty properties are there? How many people own multiple homes? How many families are being denied homes because of air B&B? Falling populations in many parts of the country. Work from home freeing up city centre property. Why are we building more homes?

Water wet shock!

No shit Sherlock.

Wait, from a paragraph openly stating that it’s MP’s blocking the increase in supply, to a load of guff about punishing and encouraging developers. Developers make money from developing. The government buys support by pumping up asset bubbles. Nothing will change here.

13years ya crook

Also, breaking news - the Pope is catholic

Sheds skins like a snake.

His party brought another 550,000 people into the UK last year. To add to the millions arriving since 1997. That's why housing (and everything else) is in short supply.

OK captain obvious 🙄

Michael Gove believes more housing needs?, his Govt in power for the last 13yrs

From the Tories who have promised more homes with every manifesto yet fail to deliver.

I wonder what helped break it....

Who has broken it. Sometimes tories speak as if they are not in power.

No shit

No, we need to bring less people in. Over 1.5 million visas last year. Over 500,000 stayed and all took up housing. There are very few brownfield sites in my area- there were many. All now have houses. Infrastructure collapsing. GPs and the hospital cannot cope!

Alternatively, stop letting millions of migrants into our Country michaelgove

More woodland is needed not housing estates.

Just watching CallTheMidwife It’s set in 1968 and they’re saying EXACTLY the same thing This country is abs useless

Who broke it? 🤔 ToryCostofGreedCrisis

YOU’VE HAD 13 YEARS michaelgove

Maybe the population model is broken! Stop growing the population and maybe housing will catch up.

You guys only had 13 years to build homes…

But your still allowing thousands of crap poorly built houses to be put up creating a huge energy problem for the future . No passivehouse? No GSHP ? No fully insulated? Just useless boxes that only benefit the energy corporations as so expensive to heat - environment disasters

Nobody should have two houses until everyone has one

This coming from the man who called a croydon council/brick by brick fiasco “wonderful”

Genius. Thanks for letting us know....

There’s plenty of homes but they’re all Frankensteined into 6 bed flats for students 🙄

More housrs is gasoline on a fire wothout fixing the underlying problems, they need to fix the predatory buy to let mentality in the UK and provide social housing for those who need it.

Worth mentioning that since the SNP have been in power in Scotland they've built 102,055 affordable homes. How many homes did UKLabour build after they came to power in 1997? ~7,870 homes ACROSS THE WHOLE UK, pitiful!

And leasehold needs abolishing NOW

£2400 average rent in London, there's nothing more to add really

michaelgove yes because of 'right to buy' !

I think he should blame the government that has been in charge for the past 13 years.

Stop mass immigration & we’ll be ok

No we just need less people who don't work.

He must have said this 20 times in the past six weeks but has not suggested a solution. ToryBritain

You don’t need more homes, you need to do something about WHO is getting those homes

FSCS in our experience ignored clear evidence that our financial adviser lied about our income in order to illegally transact an inappropriate mortgage and get the commission. FSCS lied to our MPs and their own Board about us to try to justify themselves

That's what happens when you leave everything to private businesses. They want profits, have share holders, and are not interested in the long-term benefits.

Who for? Britons?

At last build more and move housing out of HA control and back to LA’s

They missed a trick with the great council house sell off in the 80’s - should have included a legal requirement for councils to build one new council house for every one sold.

13 years in power and only just noticed.

504,000 net migration and its bound to be..

Technically he’s right… Problem is it’s taken him 13 yrs of being in power and having the opportunities to fix it…before he realised it…Really?

Britain is broken. End of.

Less incoming people 🙄

No, just stop ripping us off with crazy stamp duty costs & high taxes for investors.

Good grief

What a genius.

Yeah build loads just make sure people don’t need a £60000 deposit a half a mill mortgage otherwise it’s a waste of time

So they water down planning legislation to try to force development through on greenfield sites like here in saveourwolds1 matlock Dines4Dales Housing and planning regulations need a total overhaul in this country along with second home ownership!

The major house builders have given up and are refusing to actually build until government policy is transparent in what, where and how they can build. All Conservatives fault.

Why has his political party left this for 13 years?

Broken by politics. Too many have multiple properties Property prices are beyond the reach of many Property rents are extortionate. We need land to provide food to reduce imports. Or are we to become a country dependant on the rest of the world for food.... 🤔

We need less people not more homes. Population increase from legal and illegal immigration over the last several decades, is the reason we are in this mess! More houses means more green spaces and trees gone forever, yet we are pushing a green agenda. 🤦

Same in the US.

No shit Sherlock! What is his brief again?

The UK needs a whole transformation. People deserve to live a better life.

13 years

More homes? Homes aren’t even selling in our area, and on one development first time buyers get a 30% discount. Plus before they build anymore homes it might help if they expand the infrastructure, health centres and schools are full and yet they still build.

This is announced as if the Conservatives have played no role in the developed crisis

No sh*t, Sherlock.

No sh1t sherlock guess who was in charge !

How many years has Gove been in government again?!? How many years of failure?!?

What needs to happen is that the govt needs to setup a home building arm to make homes for minimal profit, at the moment homes are being built by charlatan housing companies selling over priced shoe boxes.

We will end up be a country of high rises

Yep. Broken by everyone government and councils.

I wonder who broke it?

Says Michael Gove who has been in gov most of this 13 years.

The conservatives have spent 13 years and more ignoring the fact the thatcher model has failed leaving generations with no hope HousingCrisis EconomicCrisis

I hope he's doing his damndest to find the bastards who broke it

If only he'd been in the Gove-rnment for 12 of the last 13 years, he could have done something about it.

Wonder who's been in charge for the past 13yrs... 🤔

Michael Gove the Minister of the obvious.

Thank god you haven’t had THIRTEEN years (& counting)!to sort this……..oh wait a minute

Yes because how many migrants are coming, control the boarder

Broken by Thatcher and Blair combined. Sad day for UK society but great news for Rachman landlords.

Jesus Christ will someone tell him what party HE has been part of for the last 13 years!!!

Was he asked what the fuck his government have been doing about it during their 13 years in power?

Broken by whom?
