UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman 's apparent comparison between pro-Palestinian demonstrations and Orange Order marches shows "contempt" towards unionists and "sheer ignorance" of Northern Ireland .
In an apparent reference to the Orange Order - an organisation which has since asked for clarity on the remarks - Ms Braverman wrote: "I do not believe that these marches are merely a cry for help for Gaza. Eamonn McCann, a key figure in the civil rights movement in Derry in the late 1960s and a lifelong anti-war campaigner, gave his view on the Home Secretary's comments in an interview with Belfast Live.
"When I say ignorance, I'm not using that as an insult. I mean they genuinely don't know about what's happening in Northern Ireland and they genuinely don't care about what's happening in Northern Ireland." They see unionists as voting fodder to be wheeled onto the stage when the Tories need to win a close vote, but there's no reciprocation."
And on the need for protests, he said: "Among the influential actors involved in this whole scenario are the crowd demonstrators, because the sheer size of the protests, demonstrations the crowd is having a direct impact on the politics at the top.
