UK envoy to India says Britain regrets Amritsar massacre, but does not apologise

Incumbent prime minister and BJP leader Narendra Modi and his challenger, Indian National Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, were among those who attended the memorial event on Saturday.

The massacre occurred amid a period when Indians were becoming increasingly restive in the face of colonial government measures they found repressive. Dyer said later that the firing was"not to disperse the meeting but to punish the Indians for disobedience".

Amritsar massacre no doubt is a tragedy..but why don't India apologise for many other massacres taken place in Kashmir and in minority Indian states ..This is very hypocrisy on their part..India should not be seen as champions of humanity..Charity beings at home..!!!

Why should they? No one alive today was responsible. Important thing is WE remember.

This was an horrendous & cowardly act of murder of innocent families, by our British Army. The government should formally apologise to India for this massacre & for ignoring the wounded left to die throughout that night.

You can’t really apologise for something I’ll great great grandparents did years before we were born that’s just ridiculous.

The shooting was not ordered by the British Indian authorities but by the local military commander. So tho no official apology may be required, it would in my view have been instinctively appropriate to have given one in view of the enduring friendship between India & Britain
