The proportion of elderly people living in severe poverty in the UK is five times what it was in 1986, the largest increase among western European countries, according to a new study.

Bran558 you reap what you sew

This ought not be, how does England ignore the elderly?

Christia_Allard

stop telling everyone that pensioners are rich and responsible for all the country's ills - most are just managing

tory austerity strikes again..... ' Let them die and decrease the surplus population ' E.Scrooge 1800 something ? STOP johnson....STOP tory methodology.

I’m sure they’ll blame it on the immigrants like in the US.

The Guardian has lost all credibility. It now uses data dating back 10 years.

Bran558 Not enough money left after paying handouts to Pakistani pedophile rape gangs and subsidizing sodomite parades.

Living standards for the elderly are simply below par and having to constantly qualify for means tested benefits to survive - not good. This is due to the basic pension being too low forcing people to have to claim other benefits and/or work. For some, working is not an option

HarrisRichard77 Where does all the tax payers money go to? Queen seem to have it pretty good

What a shameful stain upon one of the richest nations in the world! Where does the notion come from that our pensioners are living off the fat of the land? To add to their misery they’ve even had their free tv licence benefits removed. This government is a total disgrace

You say 'worst' in the title but then the article says that it's the 4th out of the 16th studied countries. Did I read wrong?

Oh brexit will not help this matter

Sadly, there's far worse yet to come. The government is still out of f*cks to give about the poor and the elderly.

News like this thanks to Brexit is non news or worse just shrugged off - but it is indicative of what kind of society we live in now in the UK - poverty is the big issue here

Why don't you import more immigrants to pay for the pensioners?

AngelaMRecord And Brexiters don’t gaf.

Yet they vote Tory and for Brexit they ain’t the brightest bunch are they

It's ok though because our bumbling PM BorisJohnson will go to Europe next week and tell them he is not bluffing about a NoDealBrexit That'll make everything ok and our elderly won't live in poverty in post Brexit Britain! ToryBritain WorkUntilYouDie

cee4cat 😮

Don’t worry Brexit will improve this situation. LMAO and you have BJ as PM

Only have to visit bargain stores in dilapidated parts of the North to see this is starkly true. But focussing all our resources and energy into a ‘No Deal Brexit’ will surely resolve our many inequalities?

Conditions are likely to worsen for Britain's elderly after Brexit, as the country's care sector relies heavily on European migrant workers.

This is the most neglected age group in the UK and no one seem to care!

After Brexit the poor will be hardest hit,but who cares about that?

A badly written article with the data from 2008, no comparison data for this decade. Should not the editor check what publish?

This has been going on for decades!

Sounds like the UK should leave the EU then as soon as possible. The limited common market called the EU clearly hasn't worked out for the UK elderly. cleanbrexit

The EU has been so good to us 👍🏻

..and UK doctors!!

Let them pick berries or starve.

And with the changing of pension age to 75 coming it's getting much worse. This is why my retirement planning is early Death.
