UK beach where you can spot dolphins and even a whale 150 miles away

The only thing guaranteed with the UK weather is inconsistency, so after days of glorious sunshine, the chance of 14C temperatures and persistent drizzle is high. So it's important if you are leaving Nottingham, to pick somewhere that is great fun, whatever the weather.

One standout location is Newborough Beach, adjacent to the forest of the same name, which is frequently hailed as one of the best beaches in the area. It's also known for its abundant wildlife, including the rare chance to spot a red squirrel. While sunbathing might not always be on the cards at this time of year, this beach is perfect for exploration. The nearby peninsula can be accessed at the end of the bay, where you'll find a maritime history museum, a ruined church, a lighthouse, and a row of terraced pilot houses.

Another was similarly enthusiastic, saying: "Wonderful evergreen forest on the West Coast of Anglesea. The home of the island's biggest red squirrel population. Also packed full of fungi and lichens for those that like that side of things. The squirrels are highly elusive, and you probably need to go off the gravel paths and into the forest on one of the many trails, to see them. Be very quiet.
