An investigation into the incident found that Uber is not liable for the death of Elaine Herzberg last March.

Uber has escaped criminal charges after one of its self-driving cars fatally crashed into a woman walking her bike across the road in the US last year.

An investigation into the incident found that Uber is not liable for the death of the pedestrian, although the car's human backup driver, Rafaela Vasquez, could still face charges. County attorney Sheila Sullivan Polk said:"After a very thorough review of all evidence presented, this office has determined that there is no basis for criminal liability for the Uber corporation."

Early reports suggested that Ms Vasquez was distracted and streaming The Voice on her phone around the time of the"avoidable" accident in March, according to a report from the Tempe police department in Arizona.its self-driving car tests in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto, although tests have resumed in certain parts of the US.

Arizona law (ARS 28-793) states that pedestrians crossing the street outside a crosswalk shall yield to cars.

amys_here Ummm....the self-driving car thing? No. Just no. It's fine for DARPA vehicles...not so much for pleb use. I love technology, but we're FAR, FAR off from safe automated travel. As far as the legal end of this...Uber needs to be held responsible in some way.

Was there 🤑 ever any doubt?

Y do they call the cars self driving?

Who are they paying off now

Corporations with armies of lawyers always seem to escape criminal charges.

Uber drivers sue London's mayorPrivate hire drivers commence legal action against London Mayor Sadiq Khan over congestion charge. Khan encouraged black cab drivers to invest in £60k electric cabs, then none of the promised infrastructure was put into place. There were supposed to be six charging point install companies - there is only one and 65 points for whole of London. Most drive on petrol as a result. Wasn’t they only ever exempt when booked. I see thousands with no passengers. Discriminatory because 94% of the drivers are black. Are they kidding ? What the hell is going on with this Country ? Everyone has completely lost the plot. I'm actually speechless. Why play the race card every time ?
