For a time, Peter Fury was a major player in Stockport's underworld. He was said to have faced down the town's one-time Mr Big, the even more notorious Chris Little.
By his mid-20s, he was smuggling vast amounts of amphetamine from Belgium, which he transferred to an industrial unit in Helmshore, Rossendale, where it was prepared for distribution. In 1994 he was spotted collecting a rucksack in a remote lay-by. It held 10kg of speed worth £1.5m. Another 2kg was found in an accomplice's Land Rover. In 1995 the case came to court.
Peter Fury has spared little detail about his tumultuous life in his latest interview, where he has revealed regret at not just his own, early life but also the way the modern underworld likes to settle differences with weapons rather than fists. One his sons, Peter junior, seems to be a chip off the old block, and has slugged it out for two hours with another Manchester hardman - Dougie Joyce - without anyone being declared the winner. Joyce appears to be breezing through his own time inside for a violent attack in a pub, judging by the video he posted from his cell.
Now a father of sons of his own, he admitted he had grown up in a 'violent culture' involving fists only, but he struggled to understand why these days knives were more likely to be drawn during a fight. He said he'd never look for 'trouble' but wouldn't shy away from it either.
