By Max MatzaPresident Joe Biden is urging protests in Tennessee to remain peaceful as officials plan to release video of an arrest that led to a motorist's death.
All five of the officers face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. "This is a failing of basic humanity toward another individual," said Cerelyn Davis, who is the first black woman in that role in Memphis. "He was a human piñata," lawyer Antonio Romanucci said of its contents. "It was an unadulterated, unabashed, non-stop beating of this young boy for three minutes."
Reverend Al Sharpton, a US civil rights leader, told the BBC the alleged crime was particularly painful because of the officers' race. "This case exemplifies that it is not simply a white versus black issue, but instead that this is a power dynamic that plays itself out no matter the race of the police officers," he told the BBC.
Why the f*** should there be calm when this keeps happening. Nothing has changed since 2020 has it. Yet you just spent $90 million on police city in Atlanta, so you can train more cops to be trigger happy and brutalise black residents.
US should be condemned for the systemic human rights abuses of African Americans by it’s police forces. Why should Tyre Nichols be tortured and killed over a simple infraction of traffic violation?
Why should people be calm? 5 cops murdered someone, beat him for over 3 minutes until he died. What is there to be calm about? Until they do it again? And then everyone has to be calm again?
We need federal oversight on this but there might not yet be justification. This is clearly systematic, a vibrant reflection on exactly how social injustice transpires.
This probably has nothing to do with what he was doing at the time of the stop. These cops are settling a score, simply because this is the power they think they have over the community.
