Punters have been urged to boycott the Grand National after two horses were killed at the ‘notorious’ event.According to website Horse Death Watch, the horse Forest des Aigles broke a leg before jumping a fence on the 4.5 mile course.
They said: ‘At 4.5 miles, the Grand National is one of the longest and most controversial races in the world.‘The high risk factor is what makes it so famous, but every year horses lose their lives, sustaining horrific and often fatal injuries at notorious fences such as The Chair, Becher’s Brook and Canal Turn.
They said: ‘It is absolutely tragic that 2 horses have lost their lives in one day at this notorious meeting, all for the sake of sport. Racing is a cruel and outdated pastime that has no place in modern society.’Since the start of the Grand National in 1839, there have been 83 deaths on the course. Aintree have recently made changes to improve the welfare of horses, including adapting and rebuilding fences, facilities and stables.ITV Racing confirmed the death of the two horses, saying: ‘We’ve been passed the desperately sad news we were fearing.
