PM Enele Sopoaga responds to Michael McCormack’s belief that Pacific islands will survive climate crisis because they ‘pick our fruit’

The prime minister of Tuvalu is considering pulling his country out of Australia’s seasonal worker program, after comments by Australia’s deputy prime minister that Pacific islanders threatened by climate change would survive because “many of their workers come here and pick our fruit”.

It was very sad to hear the paternalistic and colonial thinking coming from ScottMorrisonMP. Pacific peoples contribute a lot to countries like Australia and they deserve our respect not our disdain

Just waiting for the Aussies to moan about fast bowling and vicious nasty poms who swear at us and call us cheats etc etc.

Given that the amount of money that these workers actually bring back to their countries is likely minimal (after their bosses rip them off for accommodation etc), the loss of income to Tuvalu would probably be insignificant anyway.
