Political Islam looks to be a spent force in Turkey’s foreign policy, at least as far as the Arab world is concerned

officials had no reason to complain when Mr Erdogan began serving it in his palace last year. But they may have been baffled to hear that it was a present from Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. For Mr Erdogan and Mr Sisi had not been on speaking terms for a decade. As an avowed Islamist, Mr Erdogan had thrown his full weight behind the Muslim Brotherhood, which took power in Egypt in 2011 after protests toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Political Islam has made fewer inroads in Turkey than Mr Erdogan might have wished. But the Arab spring that shook the Middle East in 2011 saw the country emerge as one of its main exporters. Besides Egypt, Turkey backed Brotherhood parties and other Islamist groups in Libya, Syria and Tunisia. Mr Erdogan and Ahmet Davutoglu, then his foreign minister, wanted to expedite the collapse of the old regional order and cement Turkey’s influence over the new one.

Mr Erdogan also mended fences with other regional powers. He has proclaimed a “new era” in relations with Saudi Arabia, whose crown prince, Muhammad bin Salman, visited Turkey last summer. The crown prince is believed to have ordered the murder in 2018 of Jamal Khashoggi, a dissident journalist, in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Turkey’s motives are varied. Mr Erdogan needs Gulf money to support the lira, at least until the election. Thehas pledged to invest $10bn in Turkey and agreed to a $5bn currency swap, boosting depleted dollar reserves. Saudi Arabia is in talks to park another $5bn in Turkey’s central bank. Turkey also hopes to weaken Israel’s and Egypt’s support for Greece in the east Mediterranean, and to position itself as a transit route for natural-gas exports.

But the reset has come at a cost to Turkey’s Islamist credentials. To clear the way for reconciliation with Saudi Arabia, Turkey has dropped any investigation into the Khashoggi murder, ensuring impunity for the killers. It has ordered news outlets launched by Brotherhood exiles not to criticise the Sisi regime. At least one opposition channel has closed as a result. Damascus will also demand a price for normalisation.

Good News! Mixing religion and politics usually makes bad religion & bad politics!

Turkey supported democracy, not political Islam. Unfortunately, it is not accepted in this world. Then they talk about democracy.

YAHUDİLER TÜRKİYE'Yİ VE RUSYA'YI TERCİH ETTİ, ARTIK SİZİ TERK EDİYORLAR, KUDUR THE ECONOMIST KUDUUUUUR, KUDUR ANGLOSAKSON KUDUUUUUR, KUDUR ATLANTİK KUDUUUUUUUUR!

Turkey is now promoting authoritarianism instead.

It is one thing to try to show someone your culture & religion, it is quite another to place, on Nation-Wide loud speaker, how you want to destroy all Christian & Jewish nations, invade them & 'kill all the infidels' while you make plans to carpet bomb Greece & Israel.

14 Mayıs da yine elinize vereceğiz az bekleyin.

A leader who has fought for freedom for 20 years cannot become a dictator. Yes, there is an independent Türkiye now. A Türkiye that does not serve the West and stands upright. This article is a bespoke article. Most of the readers know the real Türkiye. Don't be funny. Please

Israel cannot be our friend and they know that very well. The important thing is to find a middle way in mutual common interests.

Idle imams angry they have to get off their duffs.

The creation of the state of Israel (1948) was anti-Semitic. Those who reject Jesus as the Savior (Jews and Muslims) are killing one another with their very own *Lex Talionis*. Ask yourself why so many Evangelicals and white supremacists are antisemitic AND Zionist!

I thought Islam was a peaceful religion?

Koca kafalar siz bile siyasal islam diyebiliyosanız Bu korkunun adıdır

Erdogan has never been a political Islamist made up by some circles. It was political Islamists who tried to impose the discourse of political Islam. Erdogan restored the rights of believers whose rights were violated and brought the Islamic country to the position it should be.

Among all nations it is only Turks that is the most honorable and with whom one shall not hesitate building ties of friendship.

Probably because the house of Saud picked up their mantle...
