The Senate is controlled by the president's Republican Party. Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell outraged Democrats last week when he said Republican senators would act in"total co-ordination" with the president's team, during the trial and vote against the process.
In your article you say he was invited to give evidence - true. But he could not bring any witnesses he may want AND would you freely go to what amounts to a kangaroo court?

The article is misleading when it says - 'The president was in fact publicly invited by the Democratic chair of the House Judiciary Committee to give evidence...' The impeachment rights for Trump included a loophole for Democrats to take them away -
