★★★ Trouble in Butetown is an underpowered portrait of wartime life in Cardiff 🖋️ FionaLondonarts

The standout performance in Diana Nneka Atuona’s new play comes from 10-year-old Rosie EkennaFebruary 21, 2023 4:39 pmis that while the characters might use the right sort of language, we get little sense that they are actually living through a war, day in and day out., Diana Nneka Atuona’s well-meaning but underpowered new work, in which the evening’s standout performance comes from a 10-year-old girl.

It’s a homely place, with paper versions of the flags of the world pinned up around the walls, and a bunch of residents who look as well-worn as the furniture. We wait patiently for it all to spark into some sort of meaningful dramatic life. Luckily, there is an American GI, Nate , hiding in the garden. He is a source of instant attraction for the frustrated Connie, who yearns to stretch her wings. After initial scepticism, the kindly bunch take Nate in, remarkably incurious as to why he is on the run. It’s behaviour peculiar to characters who are in a play that needs to keep going after the interval.

A dark picture slowly emerges of harsh segregationist policies at the American barracks – but it’s mighty odd that in a two-hour running-time, there is not one reference to rationing. One might have thought that this subject would have been pressing for Gwyneth, with so many mouths to feed on a daily basis. Parish gives a brisk performance as a woman of no-nonsense love who has weathered life’s storms; only late on do we learn what marriage to her Nigerian husband cost her in societal terms.

City of London market plans run into sheep troubleA 775 year old law could stand in the way of plans to move the City of London wholesale markets to east London. It's a bit rich, seeing the Romford Market has declined in the last twenty years under the control of Havering Council. There is such a law in Kingston-Upon-Thames as well, which roughly states 'no market should be within 6 odd miles of Kingston market', which AFAIK has never been enforced and may be why the area lost shoppers. 🤔 ContactKingston any insight to add here upon this heritage? LBofHavering are being ridiculous yet again, completely ignoring the benefits and jobs this move will bring to residents. From ULEZ opposition, building data centres on the green belt and failing to act about the Illegal waste dump on fire at Launders Lane, the council is wrong.
