Staunch Tory Brexiteers and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party met on Tuesday evening to discuss the prime minister's attempts to strike a fresh deal as the Protocol continues to cause issues for Northern Irish businesses.

The DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson may have sounded constructive over Rishi Sunak's approach to the Northern Ireland Protocol talks. But make no mistake, Number 10 and the unionists are as far away as ever in substance.

Indeed there are some in the Democratic Unionist Party worried that Sir Jeffrey is giving Number 10 false hope that an agreement might be struck when it is unlikely. The DUP object to EU rules and regulations continuing to be implemented in Northern Ireland, after the rest of the United Kingdom has left the bloc.

The North is a shared island and it cannot be taken out of EU

Don't think Indiana America cares

Sunak has an ace up his sleeve in that he can threaten to call a snap General Election. Given how badly the Tories are doing in the polls and how the British public have turned against Brexit would any brexiter be truly confident of getting re-elected.

There isn't a Northern Island issue. You ignore the EU and its demand for borders to protect its tarrifs and if they don't like it they can build a hard birder And good luck to them in trying. It's not our problem .
