Tributes to much-loved disability sport pioneer who paved way for others to compete

Former DASH chairman Fred Ashworth, of Baxenden, was a serial winner in Disability Sport England competitions in his two best sports. In 1960 he was awarded a gold medal and featured in the ‘Daily Mirror New Year’s Honours list’ - in recognition of both overcoming his struggle with his disabilities and developing a successful career at Burton Tailors.

While managing the Burtons shop in Bacup in the 1960s he met Jim Meadowcroft, who would become a professional snooker player and BBC commentator. The keen snooker player of 50 years would be on the baize with Meadowcroft at the Bacup Billiard Hall every lunchtime for a number of years. He became chairman of DASH, extending its reach to support the mentally, as well as physically disabled, and expanded the activities that the charity put on for its members. Members of the organisation would attend a club night in The New Era on Paradise Street every Tuesday where they would play table tennis and other indoor sporting activities.
