Six Traveller families have won a High Court appeal against a decision which would stop them living on land they own in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
The families say they bought the land to give them "a place to call home" after previously living on the roadside. Addressed to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, it read: "I am a 10-year-old girl in year five and I am a traveller. Can we live at Old Winthorpe Road Stable Yard? The council won't let us live there and I live in Newark."She says her kids were "jumping for joy" when she returned home to tell them they'd won their appeal.
"Are they really integrating into the community? They sound just like our local site here in Kent," one email read. "We didn't break into a local park or anything like that, we bought our land. Yes we put in our planning application retrospectively but we're trying our best, otherwise we'd still be on the roadside now. We want to be part of the community."

... and the family in the carefully selected BBC photo bears no semblance to the ones throwing rocks at bailiffs on The Sherriffs are Coming
Interesting choice to quote the family a bunch of ethnically-charged hate mail & ask how they felt about it. Would we ever do that to any other social group? 'Hey, dear Welsh Family, BBC here. We've got a bunch of people, who think you're simple, rude & cheap; any thoughts?'
If you want to settle on a piece of land then why not buy a house.
Teeves
Get dem ahht. We voted ahhhtt. Why are they still here joenottoofussed
Least they can fly tip oan their ain land now.
So people who “travel” want to live on agricultural land. It’s not allowed. For a week maybe but not to live permanently.
Is this even news?
Ask them where they got the money to buy the land, if they earned it fair and square and paid tax on it, if the didn’t take it off them
Leave them alone, they are just normal law abiding, hard working tax payers like the rest of us.
Lucky heather!!
Imagine paying a mortgage on a house that, with little more than the stroke of a pen, has been made completely worthless.
I get on well with this community. Right laugh. I remember once we wanted to get in our mates car but there were no seats so me and the lad got in the boot. Better than Blackpool Pleasure Beach that was.
There goes the neighborhood.
Like it or not, it’s their land. On the plus side they now have a permanent place to settle. On the minus side they now have an appreciable asset that can be targeted by anybody with a legitimate lawsuit from local residents to the Inland Revenue.
Effectively property speculation: land w/o planning permission is usually a fraction of the price it would be if it did have planning permission. Retrospectively applied for permission, lost and then played the victim card.
Can't live on land that's subject to possible flooding? Yet, thousands of houses are built on floodplains, or riverside. If flooding was a serious criteria to stop people living on the land then they have let millions of people get away with it.
All we need.
TERRIBEL RESULT!!!
Fecking right!
And why don't the authorities clamp down on their widespread horse neglect? It is a national disgrace and no one will deal with it; not councils (on who's land the horses are often grazed on), the police or the RSPCA.
And yet normal people are denied permission to build a little extension. One law for some and another for others.

looks like a blatant tax dodge to me
