A train operator which runs services across northern England and into Scotland has issued a"do not travel" alert for today as a"system issue" is causing major disruption on its network.
TransPennine Express, which is owned by FirstGroup, has suffered problems for several months because of staffing issues. The company today said there was a high level of unplanned cancellations and disruption due to a"significant" issue with the rostering system. The operator has advised them not to travel on TransPennine Express and to use alternative transport.
Company spokesperson Kathryn O'Brien said:"Due to a significant rostering system issue, today we are experiencing a high level of unplanned cancellations and disruption across our network. "We know this will have a significant impact on customers travelling with us today and sincerely apologise for any disruption caused."
Transpenine Express has to be the worst rail service in the UK. It's always been unreliable but it's become impossible to rely on for travel of late. They axed 1/3 of services on my route during Covid and still cancel roughly 20% of their journeys every single day.
This company is not fit for purpose. Shocking how they can still continue. Time to Ditch them soonest.
I travelled a fair bit by rail this year. Every time TPE announced an 'unplanned cancellation', I took a shot. It wasn't a drinking game, it was a coping mechanism.
Useless. Their service is unreliable at best anyway. I've never felt such a need to buy a car as I do now, thanks to the lousy train services up North. Privatisation didn't work.
Every day is a do not travel alert with TPE.
Meaning they don’t employ enough staff
The issue being they don't employ enough staff to run the business so they can give that wage money to the shareholders.
What's the point on having trains when you're not supposed to travel. Is it like the Tory Government, where it's 'not fit for governing'?
Total and complete shambles. No accountability. Should be huge fines for the operators if this happens except for force majeure.
I’ve had my own ‘do not travel’ on TPE for months as they are generally unreliable and shit
Now tomorrow I am travelling to Paignton Devon again..this time I will travel via a route using two TOCs and we will compare the message between the TOCs in PA platform messages and posters
😂😂 embarrassing

You mean you’re not paying overtime
Funny how most ToCs can run a near full timetable but some can’t manage a to run even a partial timetable, strange how that works.
Its not a rostering system issue... Its a rostering fulfilment issue. They are running solely for a profit cutting corners wherever possible.. This is the service you get when staff refuse overtime. But the media says its US that are the problem.
This train operator gets worse, whoever runs this business needs sacking
COVID
Bit homophobic
Run by the first group... they're shocking on buses, so it doesn't surprise me on the rail system
