NOTRE Dame cathedral could be destroyed in hours after firefighters struggle to contain a massive inferno which has wrecked part of the iconic landmark this evening.
A "stray flame" linked to £5 million renovation work is thought to have sparked the inferno in the loft at around 5.30pm local time. Police said no deaths have been reported although a firefighter has been "seriously injured" while battling the blaze, according to reports.A fire department spokesman said the next 90 minutes are "crucial" in the fight to contain the rampaging inferno.

Notre Dame – which means 'Our Lady’ – was build in 1160 and completed by 1260, and has been modified on a number of occasions throughout the century.The original spire was build in 1250, and had five bells, but it was dismantled in the mid-19thCentury.

Once the fire started to pick up pace there was little the emergency services can to but to salvage what they can and contain the fire to portion already destroyed. Sadly it’s now a recovery operation and one of the most significant historic fire losses of our time.

Questions for Paris fire brigade as Notre Dame burns out of controlWater will not be dropped on to Notre Dame in Paris for fears of ruining the cathedral and injuring people in neighbouring buildings. Up to 400 firefighters are currently tackling the blaze. I only hope and can only hope. No fatalities get water dropped on it from helicopters, things have already been lost.
