Just hours before Liz Truss resigned following weeks of chaos in Government, one Lancashire Tory MP gave his final damning verdict on her premiership.
Wednesday night saw the Labour Party lodged a motion which sought the permanent ban of fracking. If passed, it would have given Labour the opportunity to force a vote on a permanent ban. The Government gave a different interpretation of what the vote entailed, saying it was instead a confidence vote in Ms Truss' leadership, with Conservative MPs ordered to vote it down or face sanctions including being kicked out of the party.
Mr Maynard expressed his exasperation before the vote took place, telling the house of his “despair, frustration and fury” at how the Government had handled proceedings.
Ms Truss has so far remained defiant that she would remain in post despite internal rows and the axing of almost all of the policies she has announced in her short tenure. Her official spokesperson this morning said: “The Prime Minister acknowledges yesterday was a difficult day and she recognises the public wanted to see the Government focussing less on politics and more on delivering their priorities. That is also what the Prime Minister wants.
