The race for the capital’s mayoralty with Tory candidate Susan Hall is tipped to be tighter than initially predicted With a majority of results declared, the Labour incumbent was on course for his biggest ever margin of victory as challenger Susan Hall– and sparked recriminations among Tories who believe the party could have run him close if it had picked a different candidate.
The Mayor’s second term since 2021 has proven divisive, with a political backlash against his expansion of the ultra-low emission zone which imposes steep charges on the drivers of polluting cars and claims he has not done enough to tackle knife crime in the capital.His policies were blamed for Labour’s defeat in the Uxbridge & West Ruislip by-election, which was triggered by Boris Johnson’s resignation from Parliament last summer.
A source close to the Mayor said: “A third-term mayoral win is unprecedented, and any politician increasing their majority in a third election is almost unheard of in UK elections history.” Gavin Barwell, a former Conservative MP in London who was also Theresa May’s chief of staff, said: “Sadiq Khan was beatable, but by fielding a candidate who swing voters and some lifelong Conservatives wouldn’t vote for, the Conservative party gifted him a third term. Will it learn the lesson?”
