'It was the Prime Minister, when standing for election, who said China posed a systemic threat, then that was backed down to systemic challenge. But now I understand that’s moved to epoch-defining challenge,' Sir Iain Duncan Smith said

was one of the China-sceptic MPs who questioned the Prime Minister’s apparent downgrading his assessment from last summer that the UK’s “largest threat” was posed by Beijing.

It came after the “refreshed” Integrated Review said Britain was committed to “swift and robust action” to counter any threat to UK national interests from China. The document describes the approach as a “template for mature diplomacy” between two permanent members of the UN Security Council, mirroring that adopted by key allies, including those in Europe, the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.

“We can’t be blind or naive to the challenge it poses, which is why we’re in the here and now,” he told reporters. “What are we doing? We’re removing surveillance technology. CGN is no longer in our nuclear power station. We’re passing a new law to have transparency and accountability of money that’s going into our higher education institutes. We’ve got foreign influence registration scheme, a new economic deterrence unit, national security protection agency.
