Brentford head coach Thomas Frank says it was a “minor setback” that Ivan Toney failed to make his England debut this week.
Striker Toney, 26, was called up by Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s Nations League matches against Italy and Germany, but failed to make an appearance for his country. Toney wasn’t included in the matchday squad for the 1-0 loss to Italy but was named in the 23-man side for the draw against Germany. However he failed to get any minutes on the field.
He has now returned to Brentford and while Frank admitted it was unfortunate for Toney not to make his international debut, he believes he now has a chance to “prove people wrong” in his side’s upcoming fixtures. He said: “I think in life and football the way you get success is you can show resilience and come back from smaller setbacks. Of course Ivan hoped to come on the pitch.
