Anyone who worked for or with Graham Taylor will probably tell you they learned so much from the great man, both about football and life.
It came back to me when I listened to Rob Edwards last week, repeating his mantra of the importance of trust in the camp. He’s the first Watford manager/head coach I’ve spoken to since Ray Lewington in 2003, so I may not be the best to judge – but I’ve not heard too many of those in charge of team affairs in recent years using that word so much.
Indeed, having spoken to players of that era recently, they all said the same thing. That group was so tight, the belief was so high and the trust in each other was so strong that they felt they could do anything they set their minds to. I like to think that trust is a two-way thing, and our relationship will continue to grow as he talks to me more and sees that what I write is reflective of his views and a fair assessment of games and performances. The key thing is, when he talks to me, I am confident that he’s not giving me half truths, saying what he thinks fans want to hear or merely waffling to fill time.
I have to say at this point, I also get the same feeling with Scott Duxbury. Both he and Edwards have, in a short space of time, worked with me in a way that has encouraged me to trust in them. I’ve watched two pre-season games in person, a third on a stream and a fourth afterwards on tape. I wasn’t too panicked about the defeats, I’m not too excited about the win. In all honesty, I take very little from pre-season games other than hoping to see a shape/pattern of play and wanting to notice increased fitness levels. I can tick both those boxes.
I know fans have strong feelings on what’s happening, and not happening, in pre-season and as someone who has been in exactly the same position for many seasons, I empathise. I’ve watched copious head coaches say and do things through numerous summers, generally thinking I don’t believe and/or don’t like what I’m seeing and hearing.

androofrench The manager isn't the problem, he can only work to his experience, knowledge & what he is given. Respect, trust, belief works both ways. We have backed manager, after manager knowing they can be gone in a flash. That won't be taken out on RE, we will back him, but still
androofrench I trust Edwards as I’ve trusted other head coaches and managers, their not the problem, It’s sad knowing if we lose 3 or 4 games he could be gone and everything that he’s said and put into place comes to nothing.
