Four tigers have mauled to death their tamer in southern Italy, fuelling calls for a ban on the use of animals in circuses as parliament debates the issue.

No more circus animals, no more horse racing, dog racing, bull fighting, rodeo, running of the bulls. Dog sledding and equestrian seem alright ethically.

Circuses are relics of another age, including the risks taken by performing artists and a certain level of cruelty to children in their training as performers. But there would be something sad about losing a long standing part of European culture.
