The government says penalty fares will rise from £20 to £100 in January.

The penalty for dodging rail fares in England is set to rise from £20 to £100 in January, the government has said.

The penalty will be issued as a surcharge on top of the price of a ticket for the passenger's journey. The DfT suggests the crackdown will help modernise the railway system and ultimately reduce the cost to taxpayers, "who are currently footing the bill of those passengers travelling without a ticket".

But under laws passed by Parliament on Wednesday, those penalties will increase in England for the first time since 2005.The government hopes the change will bring the national penalty in line with those issued by Transport for London and Manchester Metrolink, which charge £80 and £100 respectively. The Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators, estimates that fare evasion costs the industry about £240m each year.

They should be going to check the Underground… more money 🤑

Outrageous fleecing.

At a time where European countries are reducing or making free public transport, to help their citizens this winter, the UK is increasing its fines for not paying our already exorbitant ticket prices. British exceptionalism indeed.

elonmusk can u buy the trains next? For my old job to get the train to work (5 stops/ 8.5 miles) and back was £7.20 a day, £36 per week. More than 10% of min wage (318 per week). Now I drive 15 miles (and back) for around £20 per week.

This is typical British Government. Unimaginative and technologically backward. If someone boards a train without a ticket... sell them a ticket. Oh, wait. One can't buy tickets on board every train.

This is why I drive everywhere.

How about arresting all the Muslim grommer rapists gangs? ... Just a thought? 🤔🤔

Cheaper than the tickets 🤣🤣🤣 might as well fare dodge

With rail and coach prices as they are, they won’t be anyone to issue tickets to!

Cheaper than the fare

I'll take the fine mate. 👍

Oh Lord

Only if you get caught

It is fair at all

Cheaper than the rising costs of a ticket

Ha if only there were trains to catch !

England getting railed Sorry Sorry

That's about 100th of the price of a ticket. Worth the risk I'd say.

So it's just cheaper to pay the fine than buy a ticket.

So, still cheaper than a same day travel card then
