At least 10,000 people risk irreversible eyesight damage because of missed care during coronavirus lockdown, experts say

At least 10,000 people are at risk of suffering irreversible damage to their sight because of missed care during lockdown, experts say.

They say the risk is highest for people with conditions like age-related macular degeneration , diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment who need continued treatment to preserve their eyesight. Specialists from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists found that in some areas, up to 50% of patients were not attending the most urgent appointments - and say overall there has been at least 30% non-attendance for procedures in March and April and 20% in May in England.

Mary Wardlaw, 89, was six months into her treatment for AMD but fears of contracting Covid-19 led to her stopping treatment. "If you're being asked to come in at this time it's because it's really important and you are at risk of permanent harm."

My mum suffers from age related macular degeneration and needs an injection every 6 weeks. An appointment was cancelled but within 2 weeks she was referred to a local clinic. She’s now got another appointment coming up. I hope this is the same for everyone

More scaremongering from the BBC.

This is unacceptable, MattHancock.
