Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the company's collapse was"very sad news for staff and holidaymakers".
On Sunday, empty aircraft had already started to be flown overseas, ready to bring British tourists home on Monday. The CAA is also contacting hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers, who have booked as part of a package, to tell them that the cost of their accommodation will be covered by the government, through the Air Travel Trust Fund and Air Travel Organiser's Licence scheme .
He urged customers in the UK who were due to travel not to go to the airport"because very sadly your flight has been cancelled".
The government did right by not bailing them out.
BBCJonSopel Maybe JRMogg and Co were busy too buying shares in EasyJet....
Where the hell is Simon Caulder?!!! 🤔
Its a wonder they are not laying the blame at the hands of 17.4 million democratic people they do for everything else!
LucilleMaryE ney wonder there just a shite version of tui ! Tui love the baby omelette birth stories 👼
Such a shame 🙁
So predictable - you barely mention Brexit & waffle on about the net's impact on holidays patterns (also applies to Tui which is not going bust). ThomasCook: 'political uncertainty related to Brexit over recent months has led to softer demand.'
Online vs High Street again
Well bless my soul......didn't see that one coming!
Here's some information for anyone who may be wanting to check if the holiday or flights only deals are covered or how to get your money back. I thought it may be helpful to people if anyone is worrying:
About time. They have no customer service anymore and change flight times without consideration for customer
Another triumph for the brilliance of British business management
Respective holiday makers are covered by ATOL, which covers them in this eventuality. Hence the reason they are all being flown home free of cost to the holiday maker.
Errr anybody got a spare few billion
What British govt is doing ... Does it only having responsibility to take corporate tax on time even taxes from employees.. Goverment need to come ahead and rescue it's citizen rights .. good luck
A shame but the managing of this company is said to be shocking.
The Government should have nationalized the company, saving jobs and the cost of the repatriation.
BBCJonSopel Well you did want to cut back on air pollution .People better get used to camping in the rain in some farmers field cos there will be loads of spare fields as there will be not many farting cows that need them
Why don’t you mention the real cause of this catastrophic collapse ? BREXIT !!!! They said it, you don’t print it. I don’t get any longer 😳
Last Friday, 'experts' were telling us ThomasCook would collapse imminently. Staff were told to say 'business as usual' over the weekend. It was obviously 'project fear', 'negotiations are ongoing'. Collapse. ThomasCook blame it on Brexit. Don't you just hate analogies?
Stranding hundreds of thousands of Brits abroad . The Brexit effect begins .
The good news is that Chris Grayling is not organising the repatriation.
CheeseburgerCap that delay to Monday by the CD seems to have been rather prescient then
Should the Government have stopped ThomasCook from going into administration?
Don't see you mentioning this in your article.
What about all those £Billions pledged to mitigate Brexit economic damage? Why haven't the Tories supported Thomas Cook?
Demise of a High Street name.
Implications for AirCanada acquisition of airtransat?
Very sad. I remember as a boy travelling on the original Orient Express and the Thomas Cook representative meeting us at the Gare du Nord in Paris in his uniform with yellow banded hat to help us on our way.
Waiting for it to be blamed on BREXIT
Feel so sorry for the ThomasCookUK employees this morning.
Happy to provide a comment as someone who has saved up all year and now has had their holiday cancelled and cannot rebook
Camping and caravan holidays have increased in popularity for sure .
Well youve got to give credit to our MPs on both sides of the divide. More than happy to see any British company fail. because that is what they do.
