'This is going to cost us': Business owners' anger over council's Stevenson Square pedestrianisation plan

Some of Manchester’s trendiest and most well-known independent businesses are railing against a plan to pedestrianise a city centre square — because it doesn’t go far enough.

READ MORE: 'Everyone's talking about this south Manchester restaurant, but when I went the service was all over the place' Fred Aldous started out in 1886 but has been in its current premises since 1966. Mark says his firm has put money into the square with art installations that don’t break even for the company, adding to his disappointment.

The indoor capacity of the bar, which is themed like a pawn shop, is just 30. The 12 tables outside therefore represent 48 bums on seats, so the reduction takes the overall capacity of the business down from 78 to 46 — a 40 percent drop.

The changes to Stevenson Square are only happening because there's dedicated walking and cycling money. No cycle lane, no funding.

From bus stop to no shop!
