We should be addressing our over-reliance on certain forms of medication instead of handing them out like candy

‘Thérèse Coffey has admitted nonchalantly to handing out her own antibiotics to friends in times of need,’ writes Stefano Hatfield

“How on earth do you get an appointment to see a GP in this country?” whispered a teaching colleague to me in school this week. She is eastern European, and constantly contrasting the UK negatively with back home. She was whispering because – like me, this time last year – she has laryngitis. As autumn sets in, and temperatures swing wildly, sickness is rife in schools. She wanted to know which antibiotics I had taken. Her resigned face when I said “none, I just waited it out and asked pupils to take the register” said it all.

Under Coffey’s plans, antibiotics would still not be freely available over the counter, but would be issued if a pharmacist thinks a patient has certain conditions. To a degree, this already happens in Scotland — and the Department for Health and Social Care estimates that someThe plans are tempting. The GP crisis is not going away. are currently qualified to prescribe some medicines. But although pharmacists are extremely well trained, generally their expertise does not cover clinical conditions.
