There were loud boos in the Tel Aviv Expo Centre on Saturday night, and not just when it was announced that voters in Greece and Cyprus had once again awarded each other the full 12 Eurovision song contest points in their annual display of allegiance. When Hatari – the Icelandic entrants – waved Palestinian scarves solemnly to the cameras as their results rolled in, my fellow audience members in the Israeli city made their dissatisfaction clear.
MikeSegalov I guess you'll never understand why Israelis don't like people waving the flags of their deadly enemies in Israel. Think 'WWII - Swastika - UK' and you might get the idea.
Apparently no one on the left owns a mirror any longer. We're in Benny Hill territory here; with the simpering fat-bellied faux s&m creampuffin, etc. My God, it's biblical farce.
A bunch of European snowflakes who would have been unceremoniously thrown from the tallest of Gaza's buildings for their sexual choices shilling for Islamofascism. Very 'liberal'!
Totally agree! There's nothing wrong!
MikeSegalov 'Neighbours'? Palestine is occupied, Gaza is blockaded & you disregarded the call of the Palestinian people to BoycottEurovision2019 ! You should instead have participated in and reported on Gazavision won by Jehad Shehada, resisting through performance
A Swiss person waving a Swiss flag may not be making a political statement, but an Icelandic person waving a Palestinian flag in Israel is.
MikeSegalov Very same claim? Are you talking about the West Bank or whole of Israel
Of course
When you are a guest you threat the hosts with respect.
How about waving Israel flags in the middle East? How do you think that would go down?
MikeSegalov Eurovision is supposed to be non-political. Waiving a flag of a country that's not your own and not one from the competition is a political statement. The reaction of the crowd was that of a people tired of being told how to react by those who don't share their reality.
FREE Palestine🇵🇸🇵🇸 🇵🇸 and Palesine LOVE Sweden 🇸🇪+🇵🇸
MikeSegalov At best this article is naive bollocks but master segalov is pandering to his Israel hating audience. This is not the Jordanian or Egyptian flag but flag of Palestinian s who have not accepted existence of Israel and turned down a state in 1947 , 2001 and 2008.
It's a country governed by a terrorist organisation who continually attacks Israel and its citizens. They trained and armed the IRA who murdered thousands of British citizens. You wankers.
MikeSegalov why not, according to the UN it is a state, and dont the brits wave flag, Norway too and all the others,
If they are participating yes. If not, no. Do you do decent journalism anymore Guardian?
But waving the English flag is England is racist 🤷♂️
It's wrong when these guys do it. Not your average folk! 😅
There's no such place as'Palestine' It WAS part of trans Jordan.
There's plenty wrong with it. Pro-Palestinian supporters in the west grotesquely over-simplify the conflict and push open the door to anti-Semitism. The rise in AS and critique of Israel are directly proportional amongst those on the left.
Absolutely right. And Hatari had the guts to stand for what is right, despite the organization threat and the political context. Thank you Hatari ! May God help you return in Iceland safely.
Israel is a dark and malevolent State and people should be made clearly aware of that. The censorship demonstrates that. At the end of the day, the show should never have been there. I might have watched had it not. Boycott Israel.
Israelis want to be portrayed as normal people living a beautiful life in a beautiful country, they want the Palestinians to disappear, pushing them under the rug and stepping on them harshly or portraying them as the evil ones that shouldn't move mentioned, seen or heard.
Can't there just be simply one world government?
The issue is that they entered and so agreed to abide by the rules. As Palestine is neither in Europe nor an entrant into Eurovision, their flag is inappropriate, as would be a US flag. If they wanted to make a statement, better not turn to up, or refuse to perform on the night.
There also shouldn't be an open air prison that is Gaza or apartheid throughout the rest of Israel BDS
Great! Go Iceland 😍
Since when was it neighbourly to take over two thirds of your neighbour's garden and then restrict their access to it? Israel is an abomination and antisemitic in it's treatment of other semitic peoples and an embarrassment to all Jewish people.
Go away it’s music not political, and your a left wing crap paper
To be honest I’m surprised and disappointed that only two bands waved Palestinian flags
There shouldn't be, but there be. In the midst of Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, at an event that is meant to be as politically neutral as possible, it's stirring a boiling pot. And they knew it. It's why they did it. Eurovision controversy politics
The fact that waving a flag is controversial shows the extent of the oppression. Shame on Eurovision
Music not politics Eurovision
Great that Hatari displayed a statement - may have been better if they had boycotted it though... 🇮🇸
/ Only the Palestinians seek dream of an Israel 🇮🇱Demise ? Of which makes waving the Palestinian Flag in Israel 🇮🇱 totally not only wrong but also insulting ?
True.
its WRONG because is the place that these european exiles invaded and occupy. Its not to be spoken or mentioned. When I was a younger man, I had maps of the world with the the word Palestine on them. Now you can barely find a map that bears what the region was before invasion.

Answer this question. It should be simple, or maybe it isn't.
