Voters 'cannot be taken for granted', says the contender in the 'safe' seat

He’s the academic high-flyer who walked out of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership team. Now, 30-year-old Josh Simons is vying to be the next MP for the Makerfield constituency on the outskirts of Wigan, following the decision by sitting MP Yvonne Fovarque not to defend the seat.

Now married for five years, the couple have two children, one of which was born at the Royal Bolton Hospital. He sees his mission as helping to restore Labour’s credibility as a ‘professionally’ minded organisation and to rebuild the trust of the electorate in politics, politicians and their ability to deliver on their promises.

“Obviously, Labour’s has historically done well here, but I think it’s a real mistake for Labour or anyone not to not take seriously that deep disillusionment and malcontent with politics. And actually, locally we’ve got work to do to never write off voters who say they are all the same, that there’s no difference. We have to show them that there is. Task number one for me is doing that in Makerfield.
