'We're clinging on' Theatre leaders discuss lockdown turmoil - as venues, actors and crews fear for their futures

Theatres will be among the last places to reopen after the coronavirus lockdown is lifted, meaning venues, actors and crews are fearing for their futures.

The theatre industry is badly wounded, according to Young Vic artistic director Kwame Kwei-Armah's analogy."Right now we're at the tourniquet stage," he says."We're trying to stem the bleeding. After that, they will need a government bailout. Without one"many of us will fall off a cliff" in the subsequent months, Kwei-Armah explains. The key to reopening will be an end to social distancing."It's almost impossible economically to socially distance a theatre," he says.

The venue has furloughed most staff but has continued some work - reaching 100 members of its young directors scheme online every day, and running a local playwriting programme. Staff are also making food deliveries for a local charity. "I'm determined absolutely that all of that progress that we've made cannot go for naught. We have to rebuild with that as a fundamental."

"We're still trying to do what we are here to do, which is to give people moments of connection through art," says joint artistic director Roy Alexander Weise.

Markgatiss Has any official suggested when theaters would reopen in England?

Must be incredibly difficult for them all. However, the shows simply MUST go on. M x

I think the ONLY solution is hermetically sealed flexiglass cabins with a ventilation piping system for each member of the audience . That is the only way that theatres can reopen for the indefinete future.

Sadly most actors already know about being out of work.

Social distancing is IMPOSSIBLE in a theatre. No good dancing around this. Nobody wants to go to a venue with less than a fifth of the usual audience. Atmosphere gone immediately plus no economic reality to it whatsoever. We need good brains working on a practical solution.

Your report on social distancing and tennis. Players could use different coloured balls when serving. So one player serves with the balls they brought and the other player plays with their colour balls the brought.

I will miss theatres , but I don't see any way out

As well they should. This industry, like air travel and hospitality is no good. If you work in it, diversify.
