The Wanted’s Tom Parker diagnosed with inoperable brain tumour

Whenever OK! has interviewed The Wanted’s Tom Parker and his wife Kelsey, it’s always been to share wonderful news – from their beautiful 2018 wedding, to the announcement they were expecting their second child together earlier this year.

Sadly, life expectancy on average for such an illness ranges from three months to 18 months after diagnosis. There are still small moments of joy, when he’s playing with his daughter, for instance, but for the most part it’s obvious Tom is in shock and, understandably, in denial of sorts. Throughout the chat it’s Kelsey who takes charge and does most of the talking. She insists they are remaining positive, telling us they’ll look for alternative therapies in the hope of a miracle.

Tom: I knew something wasn’t right, but I never expected it to be this. You never think this will happen to you. Tom: I need everyone’s love and positivity. I am going to fight this. We are already exploring alternative treatments and looking at clinical trials both here and abroad, and our friends have been doing research. There are so many stories of people who were given a bad prognosis and are still here five,10, even 15 years later. We’re going to fight this all the way.

Kelsey: We were discussing this the other day and we said we will tell the kids, especially while Tom’s undergoing treatment. When we came back from the appointment in King’s College, where we had everything confirmed, Aurelia was being such a minx. We didn’t come in crying but she knew – she just picks up on moods. She knows something is happening and that’s why I think you just have to be as normal as possible. We’ll explain more when she’s old enough to understand Daddy’s not well.

Kelsey: I think it’s been good for Tom to have our baby boy to focus on. People have said this illness couldn’t have come at a worse time, but there’s not exactly a good time. We haven’t even had time to think or argue about a name! Tom: Obviously all the boys were as shocked as we were. They are gutted by the news, but they’ve been incredibly supportive. Jay has been round to see us a few times since we got the news and is reading up on everything he can and Max was here last week. Siva and Nathan obviously live a lot further away, but all four of the boys have been texting regularly and sending through different articles and possible treatments and therapies that they’re all reading about.

So heartbreaking! I too was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It is a low grade tumour but it was shocking to find out I had it. I have surgery scheduled in 2 weeks. Peace and love and prayers to you!
