While Quorn and Linda McCartney once ruled the meat substitute aisles of our supermarkets, new companies are appearing with a radically different vision of"meat-free". It is made from plant proteins - usually wheat, pea or potato. Natural colourings like beetroot juice usually provide the"blood".
Never really understood why vegetarian meat(?) is formed into burgers and sausages and kebabs - why not just leave it as vegetables.
I am a meat eater and I will remain a meat eater, it’s my choice, so butt out.
Is the BBV run by a vegan now? Not a week goes by without a story.
If any meat, real or false, still bleeds when served to eat, then it's not properly cooked. A bloody daft idea!
No, it is not the future.
Food manufacturers are clearly getting seriously stuck into bbcnews by having it promote “news” like this. Have you any idea of how much artificial and chemical junk is contained in these “foods”?
I've been before since I was 14. I've never felt the need to find replacements for meat since there's so many other delicious things to eat - a fact that it's often missed by committed meat eaters. The world does need to reduce its consumption of animal products - fact.....
Time to invest on vegan companies yall
Meat contains all 20 of the essential amino acids needed. How many does synthetic meat contain? Does anyone know?
I'd rather it didn't thanks.
Had an ImpossibleBurger for lunch today. It was...
It's amazing how offended meat-eaters get that this exists, it's almost as though their whole identity is so shallow that it revolves around what fuel they put into their bodies? Get a fucking grip.
if we all go veggie what happens to all the people in the meat industries do they just all of a sudden switch to growing veg ( think of the cost) and what about the abattoirs .
Cue piersmorgan raging about this on Monday morning’s GMB
So much processing to produce this 'stuff'. Surely it negates any environmental or indeed health benefits.
Wasn't there a time, in the dim and distant past when the word 'meat' just meant food?
No way..,,,,
I'm not interest in 'bleeding' when it comes to meat but rather the quality, taste, nutritional value and price (as well as the cost to the environment). I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and suggest that this likely won't actually taste like meat.
It can’t and never will, .... next
Meat has proteins, fats and minerals that can not be replaced and are necesary for healthy development.
Disgusting thought. Nought better than good wholesome meat. The trouble is too many homosapiens. Reduce populations of humans automatically reduced meat consumption
😂😂😂bbc propaganda again😂😂😂
No thanks, will continue to eat meat both red and white until the day I die and there isn’t anybody that will ever to convince me otherwise. Next story.
The definition of processed food.
Why is this even being forced on us? By all means create a meat free substitute for the vegetarians & vegans etc but don’t force it on the the majority that actually do like meat. So no! It’s not the future of the meat industry.
Could someone please get meat to taste like vegetables... I would love to go vegan
Can we ban hypocrisy only?
Is 🍆 the future?
It's not meat, it will never be meat. They're processed veg. Call it what it is.
How about we develop pork flavoured apples or beef flavoured bananas. Why don,t the do gooders just leave us alone. Meat rocks.
No. Meat-eaters enjoy real meat, unsurprisingly; I did when I ate meat. Just leave people alone to eat what they want, whether veggie or omnivore. We don't need to 'save the planet' - it's fine despite what the doom-mongers say.
It's going to happen anyway people. Rearing animals for mass consumption is simply unsustainable. Might as well encourage people to develop palatable alternatives.
It's against my religion to eat vegetarian meals

Fake news.
Plant based meat is a good idea as a source of protein. Vegetarian or not. But the added 'bleed' feature is little short of revolting. ImpossibleFoods
Need to outlaw calling these products meat, burgers, steaks etc
Why do vegetarians need to have food that looks like meat
Lab grown meat will probably replace current meat production. It will eventually become so cheap people will not be able to afford “real” meat and will just eat the synth stuff. As long as it looks ok and tastes fine, people won’t care where it came from.
The 'Replacing Meat' headline is not a very productive one. We have been eating processed meat all our lives, let us have processed vegetables as an option, and just see where it takes us. Not this 'Now they are taking your meat away, and forcing you to eat beans'
Meat is the best thing in the world and those who agree that vegetables are the future of meat are really missing out on so much
Lollll
I like vegetable.
Only in BBC land
No.
Not until the taste, texture and smell can be replicated,,, and I mean replicated not approximated. Off for a bacon butty now 😉
Yuk
Never.
