Government departments spent £8.2million on Chinese aid engagement in 2023Britain is still spending millions in aid to China every year despite increasing tensions with Beijing and transparency concerns, a watchdog has warned.

Government departments spent £8.2million on Chinese aid engagement last year on projects including Chevening scholarships for Chinese students and deforestation efforts Sarah Champion, chair of the Commons international development committee, said: 'For all its promises, it's shameful that the Government is still dragging its feet over winding up financial support to China.'

The ICAI also noted that a lack of transparency around the 'administration costs' of running aid programmes and other development activities.
