Hundreds of people have been stabbed to death on the streets ofover the past two years. Among them were Latwaan Griffiths and Crosslom Davis, the latter having died in December.
Such was their talent that they rose to the crest of their genre, drill music – a style of trap music defined by its dark, violent, nihilistic lyrical content. The two died just 17 months apart.The week after Griffiths was murdered in July 2018, his friend Siddique Kamara – also a drill artist – was found dead, stabbed, on exactly the same street. Drill music may have been the unpolished soundtrack of their lives, but it also contributed to their demise.
It is the line which follows, however, that is most telling: ‘While you was in detention, I was trappin’ tryna get it’ – the word trapping being slang for selling drugs. This is a familiar theme for many drill artists; leaving school early, usually by exclusion, and in turn swapping their education for the streets.But while these circumstances help explain the route to becoming a drill artist, they do not and cannot detract from the malice of the words which make up the songs.
