If you are currently deciding where to head for a short staycation, the one-of-a-kind island of Iona in the Inner Hebrides is without a doubt worth checking out.

Anybody currently stuck for ideas on where to head for a holiday should consider one Scottish island that was named the UK's top "hidden gem" for tourists.

However, it is hard to go wrong with the absolutely stunning island of Iona in the Inner Hebrides. Renowned for its captivating views, rugged landscapes, and fascinating history, it previously nabbed the top spot on a list of the UK's top 10 "hidden gems" by travel experts at Sykes Holiday Cottages. Home to sandy beaches and a range of walks and hikes, the scenery is unsurprisingly the star of the show on Iona. It is also a wildlife hotspot, with a variety of rare birds — such as oystercatchers, eider ducks, common sandpipers, and eagles — calling the island home.

Tourists should also visit the nearby Augustinian nunnery, which is thought to be the most fully complete surviving nunnery complex in the country. Elsewhere, the Iona Abbey museum features an incredible collection of Celtic gravestones and crosses.
