The student in a pit of despair and the family kept in the dark

The mother of a tragic student who took her own life amid a mental health battle has hit out at university bosses for not telling her family back home she was struggling. Kate McBean's mum has slammed the 'countless mistakes by those supposedly tasked to help her' after a Manchester coroner concluded there were 'missed opportunities' by an NHS trust to help her daughter.

Kate, her mum said, told her family students had to stay in Manchester over the summer to do extra work. Her death was 'wholly unexpected', she added. Helen said she believed 'no one acted in their best interests' and didn't respect '[their] rights as parents' to know what Kate was going through. "We feel, as a direct consequence of Kate's death, her father had a massive stroke in August 2020 and is now dependant on assistance with everyday tasks. Since Kate's death, I have been prescribed anti-depressants, which I fell will be needed for life.

"Decisions about informing families that a student may be struggling finely balance a number of factors, including whether to do so might further increase risk. In Kate's case, there was active consideration of contacting her family a number of times, which also took her wishes into account.
