Bars & Pubs In Glasgow News

Merchant City,History

We may know our pubs pretty well, but do you know why the likes of Hielan Jessie, Deoch and Dorus and the Crystal Palace got their name?

Glasgow is known as a city of great places to get a pint and there are a great many famous pubs and bars spread across the city.

Rab Ha's, Merchant City Sounding like a Glaswegian clown, this popular Merchant City spot is actually named for the famous 'Glasgow Glutton', Robert Hall, better known as Rab Ha' - who could literally eat people under the table and was well known for winning competitions in his time thanks to his ravenous appetite.

This is for good reason, as it's claimed to be the longest continuous bar in the UK , at an iconic 104 feet and three inches long. The theme running throughout each of Scouller's pubs was horses, which was Scouller's passion in life. Hence, The Snaffle Bit then was a common piece of equipment used in horse racing.

Deoch An Dorus, Partick Partick used to be the final stop for the 'drovers' who came from all over the Highlands to the Glasgow cattle markets, and a Deoch an Dorus, which is a Gaelic phrase meaning a drink at the door, or traditionally a drink given to a guest by a host before they leave . Crystal Palace, city centre The iconic building this famous bar is housed in was designed in the 1850s and was inspired by the Crystal Palace, which was the centrepiece of the 1851 Great Exhibition in London.
