The Green Party and well-organised independents have hoovered up seats that could both prevent Labour gains at the next general election

‘The message is clear that people want the Tories out, but voters alienated from Labour are looking elsewhere’

Lord Peter Mandelson, reportedly now advising Labour leader Keir Starmer, once said: “The people of south Wales will always vote Labour because they have nowhere else to go.

Labour voters have got somewhere else to go. , and even lose some currently Labour-held seats., tuition fees and the environment. Labour’s housing policies are far from bold enough to convince young people they have the answers either.These were the first national elections since the Hamas attack on 7 October and Israel’s bombardment of Gaza since.

But it is not only in areas with large Muslim communities where Labour is showing vulnerability. In places like Bristol and Stroud in the South West, theFurther south in Hastings with a Conservative MP, the Conservatives lost six seats. But in a seat Labour lost by just 346 votes in 2017, they were not gained by Labour – who also lost two.
