Save time by listening to our audio articles as you multitaskThe port is being developed by Cosco, a Chinese shipping and logistics giant, with Volcan, its Peruvian partner. Gonzalo Rios, one of the managers, stresses that it is a market-driven private-sector project. Since it is close to Callao, Lima’s large modern port, some are sceptical that it can attract sufficient shipping unless it becomes a strategic beachhead for Chinese firms.
Most Latin American countries do not want to have to choose between the United States and China, as Donald Trump once suggested. At Mr Trump’s insistence, was renegotiated. The United States-Mexico-Canada agreement that replaced it includes clauses aimed at blocking Chinese trade and investment. Mr Bolsonaro, a fan of Mr Trump, has been hostile to China. Brazil remained in thegroup that includes China, India, Russia and South Africa.
Latin America’s internal political fragmentation is mirrored at regional level. Attempts at deeper integration have faltered. Mercosur, founded in 1994 as a putative customs union, was a cornerstone of Brazilian foreign policy. But it is declining into irrelevance, partly because agribusiness has eclipsed manufacturing. The Pacific Alliance founded in 2011 and comprising Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru has lost momentum.
Divisions over democracy overshadowed the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles in early June. Mr Biden did not invite Cuba, Venezuela or Nicaragua, which caused Mr López Obrador and three other leaders to stay away. To the frustration of many Latin Americans, policy in Washington appears to be driven by the imperatives of domestic policies.
Esta visión unipolar que el así llamado Occidente pretende imponer de manera global es la del tipo que no espera unanimidad en las ideas sino en los procedimientos.
The West, doesn't only mean the USA. This was 20th century vision. The West is a cultural coalition and some world globalisation is part of it. China strongest world economy is far to be enough against whatever of a civilisation having a strongest historical inheritance.
The West: 'We represent universal truths, human dignity and democracy.' Every country that isn't white: 'da fuq?'
Latin America never truly wanted to be part of the west but were held hostage to the west’s financial system to have to deal with the west. To imply that they wanted to be part of the west instead of being independent is the epitome of western arrogance.
I dont see any of them abandoning the Latin alphabet for chinese. The preference is about money and goods
it is no longer possible to live under the dictatorial rule of the United States, which together with England had long planned economic domination of the planet, this needs to end, Europe and part of Asia fell in this coup, but Latin America is opening its eyes
China is plundering Africa and will do the same to South America. They are ruthless in business and brutal in governing.
I guess over a century of banana republics and regime changes sponsored by the US has left a sour taste in their mouth. Not that big of a surprise.
the CCP lure of cheap credit is the problem...then they wait til the hooks are in deep, then reel them in ...the fall for the 'hook-line and sinker' and are taken over by communism !
Latin Americans who prefer a “multi polar world “ are just tying to fool you into forgetting that what they really want is a “Uni Polar” government that does not have to play by Western rules. Uruguay is the exception!
to claim that an entire continent is 'part of the west' is infantile, shortsighted, and imperialist.
Western world? Western armed aggression group?🤠
China will buy america in 2040, and they will rebrand it
I don’t give a shit if China gains more influence in Latin America. Why do you?
Most people without large exposure to mainstream media manipulation won't even see relevance here. But I am telling you, person to network, this shit is not going to work very much longer. Adapt or perish. Personally, I hope you all perish. In a metaphorical sense of course.
The Economist, a most trusted mouthpiece of Western capitalists since 1843.
Hi, how are you feeling?
As backyard of U.S. Latin America is the bottom part of the WEST!
American elites are realizing that latam is no longer their backyard and that more and more Latin Americans are standing up to the American empire
When it's convenient, Latin America is part of the West. When it's not, it's part of the Global South.
You mean part of the North Western Cross Atlantic Alliance? Maybe not, thanks. We like peace.
You guys do know that “The West” ≠ Western Hemisphere… right?
Por tu mal comportamiento, te vas a arrepentir muy caro tendras que pagar todo mi sufrimiemto Llorarás y llorarás sin nadie que te consuele y asi te daras de cuenta que si te engañan duele
Really ? Amazing ! KMarazanye mahowa15 VaMahomva
Wut? Since when has Latin America been part of the West?
We are being mislead. China is collapsing. They don't have enough 20 or 30 year olds. The supply chains are working against China. It can't export and has to import a huge portion of its energy and food needs. Mexico could be the big winner from China's demise.
