Letters: Guardian readers respond to the ongoing debate about assisted dying, and share their own personal experiences of terminal illness

As someone who cared for their terminally ill partner, Helen, for her last eight years of life, and who felt the force of the law after her death at the Dignitas clinic in 2016, I found Dr Matthew Davis’s letter on assisted dying deeply disturbing. Dr Davis appears to imply that calls for changing existing legislation are morally motivated. As a moral issue, the public has the right to make its voice heard and to be respected.

Yes. I am profoundly disappointed by the recent decision of my professional body, the RCGP, to continue to oppose (and therefore obstruct) the kind of civilised policy which the public wants and other countries already have.

The debate in the UK needs to move on. People are dying badly and without their wishes being heard or acted upon. A tragedy in this modern age. Medically-assisted dying can and should work, with appropriate safeguards.

UK will sink in a few years economically. Not likely and judging by that picture, most of them will be dead and buried (under the new runway) in a few years time. That’s the most militant care home crowd I’ve ever seen. More power to their elbow ( crutches ) !
