One day when six-year-old Ruth O’Brien was walking to school, she saw a front garden hedge carved in the shape of a rabbit and pleaded with her dad John for one of their own. If he had said no, the idea might’ve faded, consigned to history like a million other requests made by a young child.
Ruth said: "I was a little girl so I loved it. Even now, we get notes through the door all the time saying it made people's day when they were driving home from work after a bad day and nice things like that. If we're outside, people will walk past and say: "Oh my God, I love that, it's so nice!" I'd used to sit in the living room and see people taking pictures outside.
The most striking feature is the ears - on top, resembling those of a bunny rabbit, much higher than the rest of the sculpture. At the time, Ruth didn't consider that "Hedgey" would still be going strong 20 years on. Ruth is now 27, and lives in Sherwood. But even without her at home all the time, John still takes the trimmer to the bush around four times a year.
